What are the Health Benefits of Probiotics?
There are so many great health benefits of probiotics that it would be very hard to mention all of them here. So instead we have picked what we think are some of the best and most important. A lot of research is still being done on probiotics, which means the full extent of their health benefits is still very much unknown. With that in mind here is a list of some of the best health benefits of probiotics that we are aware of.
1. Immune System
One of the great health benefits of probiotics is the effect it has on the immune system. Probiotics have been shown to increase your immune system and decrease your chances of getting infections. Plenty of research has been done surrounding this subject. The results are increasingly positive for people who are taking probiotics not becoming as ill as opposed to people who are not taking probiotics. It is however, recommended to not take probiotics if you have an illness that causes low immunity.
2. Improving Digestive system
As mentioned before Probiotics contain good bacteria. When probiotics are consumed, it is believed that they help to restore the balance of gut bacteria. Some medications, illnesses and even poor diet can lead to an imbalance of bad bacteria inside your gut. Signs that you may have an imbalance of bad bacteria in your gut are, constipation or chronic diarrhoea, bad breath or excessive intestinal gas. If these symptoms relate to you then including probiotics in your diet may be worthwhile. It’s also worth noting that some probiotics can help with certain disorders such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
3. Urinary benefits
For those of you that are prone to getting urinary tract infections (UTI) then probiotics may help you. Research suggests that probiotics may help the body to remove bad bacteria, leading to a decrease in urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections can cause very uncomfortable pain, a burning feeling when you urinate and dark, smelly urine. UTI’s are very unpleasant for the person suffering from them.
4. Weight Management
Probiotics are extremely useful if you are trying to lose weight. It is believed that probiotics help with weight loss because they help your body to take in fewer calories. The reason your body would take in fewer calories is that probiotics inhibit fat absorption. This leads to your body storing less fat. It is also thought that probiotics help to decrease your appetite which would help for people who have trouble with snacking. If weight loss is what you want to achieve then you may want to have a look at this article that we wrote about having a healthy diet.
5. Improving Mental Health
In recent years plenty of research has been done looking into the health benefits of probiotics. One thing that has been discovered is that it has a significantly positive effect on mental health conditions. It is believed that using lactobacillus supplements can really help for people suffering from forms of mental illness such as depression and anxiety. Anyone who suffers from any form of mental illness will know how much of a daily struggle it can be. So it may be beneficial for you to give these probiotics a try to see if it has a positive effect on you.
6. Allergy Relief
Many probiotics have been suggested to help with allergies related problems such as eczema. This is expected to be particularly beneficial in infants. Research suggests that your child could be much less likely to develop eczema in their first two years of life if probiotic supplements are taken during pregnancy. This isn’t a guaranteed result as much of this research is speculation. So I would advise caution if you are considering trying this method.
As mentioned before this is only a handful of the health benefits of probiotics. If any of these issues above relate to you then it may be worth trying probiotics for yourself and see if they work for you.
