What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a fatty like substance, known as a lipid. Although high amounts of lipids in your body can have negative effects on your health. As they can increase your risk of serious health issues. They’re actually essential in helping the body function properly. Proteins carry cholesterol around your blood to aid your body in creating hormones, and Vitamin D. It Also helps to create substances that can help you digest food.

The proteins that carry the cholesterol are known as lipoproteins. There are two types of lipoproteins known as Low-Density Lipoproteins and High-Density Lipoproteins.

  • Low-Density Lipoproteins (LDL)- Known as the “Bad Cholesterol” LDL carries cholesterol to cells that need it. Problems arise when there is too much cholesterol for the cells to use. This can cause diseases in the arteries due to a build-up in the artery walls.
  • High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL) – These are known as “Good cholesterol”. This is because they carry the cholesterol away from the cells and back to the liver. During this process, the cholesterol will either be broken down or passed out of the body as waste.

You can have your cholesterol levels checked by having a blood test. Doctors will then know the amount of cholesterol in your body.

Your body should produce enough cholesterol by itself. However, you often find cholesterol in foods as well. Which is why having a healthy diet is one of the best ways to control your cholesterol level.
